In Memoriam: George Johns AIA

It is with profound sadness that the AIA Architects League of Northern NJ announces the passing of longtime and beloved member George Johns AIA.

George Johns, age 94, of Morristown, formerly of Alpine, passed away with his family by his side. George was born on January 13, 1924 in North Bergen, NJ. He was the son of George F. Johns and Olga Hess Johns.

He graduated from Tenafly High School, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a B.A. in Architecture. His studies were interrupted by WWII and later the Korean War where he was a fighter pilot for the Marine Corps. He earned five distinguished flying crosses.

Following his discharge in the rank of Captain he went on to develop his architectural firm, Harsen & Johns, which spanned more than five decades. George specialized in designing schools, homes and houses of worship. He was awarded the John H. Tower Award for his distinguished military service in 2000. George was a member of the AIA, Alpine Tilden Tenakill Lodge No. 77 and Picatinny Golf Club.

George is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janine Tremblay. George is predeceased by his former wife, and mother of their children, Beverly Mooney Johns. He is also survived by his children, his daughters, Deborah Johns Kline Rusak (Ray), Pamela Johns Whitney (Dan), Amanda Johns Hartman (Jim); his sons George Johns (Sarah) and Michael Johns; cherished grandchildren, Danielle Haber, Steven Kline, Daniel Whitney, Sarah Whitney, Christopher Whitney, Zachary Hartman, Alexandra Hartman and George Johns III and their significant others; and four great-granddaughters, and his devoted secretary Ann Baker.

Visiting hours on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Moritz Funeral Home in Closter, NJ. Funeral service 10 am, Friday at the Moritz Funeral Home followed by burial at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Tenafly, NJ.
