The Architects League of Northern New Jersey is celebrating Emerging Professionals Month by opening up our member meeting featuring AutoArch by DesignMorphine on Thursday October 18th to all AIA New Jersey members (regardless of section membership), as well as to any of our friends and colleagues who are not AIA members. This is a free meeting to attend with advance registration. You are welcome to attend for free whether or not you have your license, whether or not you are a member of the Architects League and whether or not you are a member of another AIA section or chapter.

Our meeting is sponsored by Porcelanosa, who are generously providing the food and open bar and are hosting us at their showroom on Route 17 South in Paramus. It all starts at 6PM with a cocktail hour including stations led by emerging professionals and a raffle for prize giveaways. Presentation: “AutoArch by DesignMorphine”
Everyday autonomy is becoming more and more embedded into our lives. The current trend is autonomous services such as self-driving vehicles, but what about self-making architecture? Artificial intelligence and machine learning are being used to design and inform design decisions, but what about making the elements of the construction intelligent themselves. Through this idea we will explore aspects of making the builders autonomous by way of robotic arms and drones. To take that idea further we will explore the implanting of the intelligence directly into the building materials themselves to create architecture which evolves and adapts to the needs of its users to create symbiotic relationships between human and built environment.

Alejandra Rojas is an architect, designer and artist. She’s currently working on a multi-use, ground up building in NYC. Previously, she has worked for architectural studios in Toronto and London. Alejandra completed her Postgraduate Master in Architecture and Urbanism (DRL) at the Architectural Association in 2015. Her thesis, “The Thread” was developed under the Robert Stuart-Smith Studio in collaboration with her team. “The Thread” explored the design opportunities of a semi-autonomous airborne tensile system, and was published in the Parametricism 2.0 edition of The Architectural Design magazine. In 2013, she graduated from the University of Waterloo. Upon graduation, she moved to NYC where she is currently working at FFA.

Li is an Architect and programmer whom is specialised in generative design, visual computing and robotic fabrication. He received his master of architecture degree from Architectural Association, Design Research Lab. His thesis project “Growing Systems” from Shajay Bhooshan Studio is a research on additive manufacturing in architecture scale with integration of responsive industrial robots, regrading construction process and material as programmable matters to create new topology of inhabitable space.
Li has worked as computational architect in several prestigious companies such as Zaha hadid Architects and gmp Architekten. He also works for Fransis Bitonti Studio in New York as creative coder to develop next generation of web-based algorithmic design programs.
Li is proficient in multiple programming languages including C++, JavaScript and Python, as well as various parametric design platforms like Grasshopper, RhinoCommon API, and Maya MEL. He is widely interested in cross-disciplinary topics such as complex geometry, emergent systems, virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

Michael Pryor is a NYC based architectural and computational designer involved in various major built or in construction works in the US, China, Dubai, and Lebanon and is currently a Designer at Trahan Architects and Design Director for DesignMorphine. In the past, he has worked at SOMA Architects, OLI Architecture, and [AY] Architecture on a range of architectural design projects ranging from museums, housing, restaurants, furniture, products, and prototypes. He was granted The New York Society of Architects Matthew W. Del Gaudio award for excellence in total design upon graduation. Additionally, Michael is the founder of the grasshopper blog [FORMul[a]RCH] and avid grasshopper3d.com forum aide. He has been the tutor to multiple design and parametric design workshops organized by Rese.Arch, 3D-Dreaming, the AA visiting school Paris with [Ay] Studio, MIT, Open Styles Lab, Harvard GSD, and DesignMorphine.

Pavlina Vardoulaki is an architect and designer based in New York City. She is the Co-Founder & Creative Director of DesignMorphine and is responsible for making connections, creating ideas for new topics, organizing and teaching workshops for DesignMorphine. She has also tutored collaborations with MIT and Harvard GSD. Ms. Vardoulaki is also currently employed at Laguarda Low Architects in New York working on large scale developments ranging from masterplans to mixed use and public projects. She has also worked at Foster + Partners on residential and mixed use high rise buildings in Abu Dhabi. Pavlina has experience in interactive design projects from Minimaforms and her involvement as Consultant and Maya Software Tutor at the Architectural Association’s world renowned Design Research Laboratory in London. Her project “HyperCell” created by Pavlina and her team from the DRL was exhibited at ACADIA, the Foster+Partners Graduate Show in London, the National Endowment for Science (NESTA), Technology and the Arts in London UNESCO, XIV World Triennial of Architecture. In addition, she has participated in a number of prestigious design collaborations such as the Ferrari Design and AA School of Architecture vehicle design collaboration, the Zaha Hadid Studio workshop for Parametric Urbanism and the Louis Vuitton & AA School of Architecture Retail Design Collaboration.
