AIA New Jersey Past President Verity L. Frizzell, FAIA, Declares Candidacy

AIA New Jersey is delighted to share the news that our immediate Past President, Verity Frizzell, FAIA, has declared her candidacy for AIA National Office in the category of At-Large Director for the years 2020-2022.

The At-large Directors, along with the Board officers and other Directors, act together as the Board in executing the duties and responsibilities of the Board of Directors. The At-large Directors act in the best interest of the Institute as a whole. The At-large Directors have some travel responsibilities in communicating the work of the Board and in seeking input from members on issues affecting the profession.

During her tenure as AIA New Jersey President, Ms. Frizzell focused on Equity in Architecture, K-12 education and the critical relationship between the two to the future of the profession.  Her interest in this priority grew out of her time on the national commission that studied equity in the profession and developed priority recommendations in 2016.

Ms. Frizzell has been a member of AIA since 2000, during which time she has received numerous honors and awards. In 2003, she was the recipient of the AIA Jersey Shore Young Architect of the Year Service Award, as well as an Award of Excellence from the Morris Habitat for Humanity Design Competition. In 2011, she was the AIA-NJ Distinguished Service Award recipient, and Feltz & Frizzell Architects was the AIA Jersey Shore Firm of the Year.  Most recently, she received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from AIA Jersey Shore and AIA-NJ.  She was also a recipient of an Award for Distinguished Performance in Technology from the University of Virginia.

In 2018, Verity was elevated to Fellow of AIA. Frizzell was selected for elevation based on her long-term, ever reaching leadership of the institute and contributions to the profession. While holding a variety of positions for many different organizations, the recurring themes of Verity’s career and volunteerism have centered around resiliency and equity.

Through her vast national experience as a Repositioning Ambassador, in the Culture Collective, with Communications, as a member of the Strategic Planning Task Force and through the Equity in Architecture Commission, Frizzell has become an expert in crafting strategies that bring members together and has used these methods as the chairman of the AIANJ Governance Task Force to reposition AIANJ as a more nimble and relevant organization.

Verity Frizzell currently holds the title of Principal Architect with Feltz & Frizzell Architects, LLC. Initially joining the firm while on her summer breaks from college, before attending graduate school, Ms. Frizzell returned to the firm in 1995 and became a partner in 1999. Upon her partner’s death in 2011, she became the sole architect in the firm.  Ms. Frizzell is responsible for all aspects of the firm, including managing the office, as well as architectural design, document production, maintaining the computer network and staffing. Ms. Frizzell’s experience ranges from commercial to residential with an emphasis on small-scale projects. Her focus is on resilient design, and she strives to incorporate materials and methods which are sensitive to the environment without compromising the needs of the client.

In 1988, Verity Frizzell was awarded her Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia. She went on to further her education, and in 1991, earned her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin.  She is a LEED Accredited Professional and a registered architect in the states of New Jersey and Texas.

Throughout her extensive career, Ms. Frizzell has held affiliations with various professional organizations. She was President of the Jersey Shore Section of the American Institute of Architects, and Vice President of Bay Head School Foundation and she served as Vice-Chairman of the Bay Head Planning and Zoning Board.
