Program Summary: As Princeton University expanded its student population, so must the need for student services expand. As such, the Department of Public Safety expanded to handle an additional 500 students. The Princeton University Department of Public Safety was previously housed at Stanhope Hall, a facility that was already undersized and outdated.
The University decided to relocate the Department of Public Safety to the former boilerhouse on campus. The boilerhouse was defunct and sitting vacant at the Southern entrance to campus. Clarke Caton Hintz was retained to design the adaptive re-use of the boilerhouse for the new home of the Department of Public Safety as well as the University's Office of Design and Construction.
Clarke Caton Hintz worked closely with Westcott Studio on the interior design of the project. The interior design creates an interesting dialogue between the existing industrial character of the building and the crisp, modernist aesthetic of the new offices. In addition, the design team intended for the facility to be open and inviting while maintaining the privacy and security required for a campus law enforcement agency. Finally, the team identified and specified the specialized furniture and equipment of the department.
Guests can park in the visitor parking deck located directly behind 200 Elm Drive. Dress warmly as we will walk a short distance between buildings.
