AIA Architects League of Northern New Jersey Hosts the Public for Women Of Carbon

On April 10, 2025, the AIA Architects League of Northern New Jersey recognized New Jersey Architecture Week with a public screening of Women of Carbon, a groundbreaking documentary that showcases visionary women transforming construction while combating climate change. Directed by Basia + Leonard Myszynski, the film explores their innovative work in low-carbon building materials, including algae-based cement, electrified manufacturing, mass timber, and greener steel. The event was held at the Franklin Lakes Public Library, part of the FLOW Film Festival. AIA ALNNJ President Chris Brand, AIA, introduced the film and welcomed the audience.

Viewers experienced a behind-the-scenes look at the Portland International Airport Main Terminal expansion, the largest mass timber structure ever undertaken. Industry leaders, including CEO Leah Ellis, architect Susan Jones, and sustainability experts like Erica Spiritos and Kate Simonen, discussed their work in decarbonization and the next generation of infrastructure.
