AIA New York State invites AIA NJ members to register for their upcoming SAP training.
Wednesday, November 5 & Thursday, November 6 | 9:00AM – 12:30PM EDT each day (you must attend both sessions) | Online | 7 HSW/LUs
Program Summary
The SAP is the training program developed by Cal OES that provides leadership, advocacy, and training to architects, engineers and certified inspectors who are interested in developing their professional skills for use in times of crisis. This workshop will teach participants to conduct rapid damage assessments of structures affected by earthquakes, wind, and water. It also teaches the appropriate protocol for coordinating with emergency managers to limit professional liability.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to consistently and safely assess structures for habitability and will receive a nationally recognized building evaluator certification from the state of California.
AIA New Jersey President Andrew Thompson, AIA, NOMAC, notes that, “As climate change affects our state, more New Jersey architects need to complete the Safety Assessment Program (SAP). The Safety Assessment Program training course is offered to AIA members to enable them to become certified by CalOES, allowing them to enter areas affected by natural disasters and assess the integrity of homes that have been damaged. Architects who undergo SAP training are an asset to the communities they serve.
Our state has been severely affected by natural disasters such as Hurricanes Irene, Sandy, and Ida, and there will unfortunately be more. The value that SAP-certified architects provide after a natural disaster is important.
Mayors and local officials who are affected by these natural disasters must know that we are a resource for them in their
time of need. The more architects that go through the SAP training, the more that the public will know they can look to us when disaster strikes, and we are trained and ready to assess the damage to their homes. Please sign up and take the program; it increases your value as an architect and makes you an important asset to your community.”
