This historic event will be a star-studded red-carpet celebration the Class of 2010 is celebrated and inducted:

NEW JERSEY HALL OF FAME – CLASS OF 2010

Michael Graves, FAIA Princeton (1934) considered to be one of the great American architects of the second half of the 20th Century; recipient of many awards including National Medal of Arts and AIA Gold Medal.

Count Basie Red Bank (1904 – 1984) The “Kid from Red Bank” became one of the leading figures of the swing era and one of the most beloved jazz musicians, band leaders and composers of all time.

Judy Blume Elizabeth (1938 – )A popular author who has won scores of literary awards, including the National Book Foundation Medal and a Library of Congress Living Legends Award; by tackling controversial subjects she has touched a nerve with young readers and has sold more than 80 million copies of her books.

William J. Brennan Newark (1908- 1997) A Barringer High School graduate who became a highly respected jurist, serving as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice from 1956 to 1990.

Danny DeVito Neptune/Asbury Park (1944 – ) actor, director, producer who gained prominence in the TV series ‘Taxi”; founder of two successful production companies, Jersey Films and Jersey Television.

Larry Doby Paterson (1923 – 2003) Second African-American Major League Baseball player and first in the American League, this Hall of Fame baseball player grew up in Paterson.

Carl Lewis Willingboro (1961 – ) Dominant Olympic athlete and nine-time gold medal winner whose lifetime accomplishments earned him the “Sportsman of the Century” award by IOC, among many other accolades.

Jack Nicholson Neptune (1937 – ) A Manasquan High School graduate who has become an internationally renowned actor with 12 Academy Award nominations and three wins, seven Golden Globe Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor.

Alice Paul Mt. Laurel/Moorestown (1885 – 1977) Dedicated to securing equal rights for all women, Paul was a leader in the successful campaign for women’s suffrage that resulted in the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.

Les Paul Mahwah (1915 – 2009) Paul pioneered the development of the solid body electric guitar and was the genius behind recording innovations such as overdubbing, delay effects, phasing, tape delay and multitrack recording; elected to Inventors HOF, Rock & Roll HOF and National Broadcasters HOF.

Philip Roth Newark (1933 – ) Weequahic High School graduate whose best-selling novels have made him one of the most celebrated living American writers.

Susan Sarandon Edison (1946 – ) Edison High School graduate who has become a popular film and television actress known also for her political activism; a five-time Academy Award nominee with one win, she has been honored for her work as an advocate for victims of hunger and HIV/AIDS among many awards.

Wally Schirra Oradell (1923 – 2007) A graduate of Dwight Morrow High School and NJIT, Schirra was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts and the only person to fly in all of America’s first three space programs (Mercury, Gemini and Apollo).

Frankie Valli Newark (1934 – ) A musical icon, Valli became famous as the front man for The Four Seasons and is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; he had 29 Top 40 hits with The Four Seasons and nine Top 40 hits as a solo artist.

Woodrow Wilson Princeton (1856 – 1924) The 28th president of the United States also served as president of Princeton University and Governor of New Jersey; awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1919.

The red-carpet opens at 3:30 with most guests arriving between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm. The media and the paparazzi line the front of NJPAC for photos and interviews not only with the inductees and celebrity presenters, but also for the many newsmakers that are on hand.

A limited number of VIP tickets to the event are available including VIP valet parking, access to walk the red carpet with the celebrities, a special pre-event reception, prime seating for the ceremony and tickets to a private post-ceremony party. The stars will shine brightly as 15 New Jersey legends are celebrated at the third annual New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to be held on Sunday, May 2 at NJPAC in Newark. Governor Chris Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie are co-chairs of the event which has become New Jersey’s version of the Academy Awards.

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees represent the wide diversity of New Jersey’s population and include jazz great Count Basie, author Judy Blume, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, actor Danny DeVito, baseball Hall of Famer Larry Doby, American architect and designer Michael Graves, Olympic legend Carl Lewis, actor/director Jack Nicholson, suffragist Alice Paul, guitar hero Les Paul, award winning novelist Phillip Roth, popular actress Susan Sarandon, astronaut Wally Schirra, singer Frankie Valli and President Woodrow Wilson. Representatives from the NJHOF expect most if not all of the inductees and/or their families to be present to accept the award.

“With three legendary actors, a rock ‘n roll superstar, a Supreme Court Justice, the father of the electric guitar, and a pioneer in women’s rights, this iconic class of inductees gives New Jerseyans around the world much to be proud of and to celebrate,” said the event’s executive producer and Hall of Fame Foundation Board member Steve Edwards.

When asked about being honored, novelist Judy Blume who was born and raised in Elizabeth, replied, “This Jersey Girl couldn’t be more pleased.” And Frankie Valli, who will be introduced by songwriter and original member of The 4 Seasons Bob Gaudio and Jersey Boys co-producer Joe Grano, said, “I am so privileged to be joining the remarkable people in the NJ Hall of Fame. It is truly an honor to be inducted.”

The New Jersey Hall of Fame was created to honor those Jerseyans who have made significant contributions to the state, the country and the world. With plans underway for regional exhibits in all parts of the state, a mobile museum to take to communities and school districts and Walls of Fame in key locations, the Hall of Fame seeks to present young people with powerful role models, educate people about the State’s history and be a source for learning, inspiration and hope for children.

“Our first two induction ceremonies were filled with surprises,” said NJHOF executive director and ceremony co-producer Don Jay Smith. “Whether it was General David Petraeus presenting our Unsung Hero Award at last year’s event, or Yogi Berra introducing Buzz Aldrin in our first year, the audience has come to expect the unexpected. We can promise that this year’s event will again be an historic tribute to the pride of New Jersey.”

In addition to presenting awards to the Class of 2010, the New Jersey Hall of Fame will present Unsung Hero Awards to two of New Jersey’s finest killed in the line of duty: Detective Mark DiNardo of Jersey City who was slain in a shootout during a robbery attempt and Deputy Fire Chief Jimmy D’heron of New Brunswick who died after rescuing 15 people from burning building. He heroically went back into the inferno to see if there was anyone left inside. The families of these two heroes will accept on behalf of all fallen police officers and fire fighters from New Jersey.

The stage band for the ceremony will once again be the Hubcaps, comprised of great Jersey musicians, joined by some surprise musicians. There will also be a musical tribute to Les Paul featuring the Rusty Paul Group plus some very special guitar guests. Fox newscaster Harry Martin will return as the official announcer for the event, a role he has played since the inaugural ceremony in 2008.
