Construction To Start This Fall And Be Completed By Fall 2012

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 22, 2010) – Fletcher Thompson, an award-winning regional architecture, engineering and interior design firm, has announced its partnership with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in building a $140 million, 648,000-square-foot mixed-use development on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway, N.J.

Located on the periphery of the campus along Joyce Kilmer and Rockefeller Avenues, the project, which is set to break ground this fall, will feature three buildings that integrate student apartments that will hold 1,500 beds, study lounges, classrooms and retail space.

“This is the largest project that Rutgers has ever undertaken to date,” said Thomas Fantacone, AIA, LEED AP, design principal at Fletcher Thompson in charge of college and university projects. “The residence halls establish a new urban edge for the campus, creating a sense of place where none currently exists.”

Of the 1,500 beds, 200 will be set aside for two-bedroom units, specifically for graduate students. These units will be in a separate wing with its own elevator. The remainder of the beds will be four single-bedroom units. All the units will be “apartment style” with a living room and kitchen.

“These are not your traditional dorm-room buildings,” said Fantacone. “They are designed to attract students who want apartment living.

Two of the buildings will incorporate well-lit landscaped courtyards, which become outdoor extensions of the interior public spaces and are designed to accommodate a variety of events. They include built-in seating and lawn areas for outdoor study and recreation. The third building will front a large retail plaza.

“The shops located at the ground floor will provide students with the convenience of urban living as well as opportunities for entertainment and social activities,” said Fantacone.

Fletcher Thompson is sharing this project, which is slated for completion by the fall of 2012, with Baltimore, Md.-based consulting design architect, Design Collective. Fletcher Thompson is the architect of record and Design Collective is the design architect.

Many of its projects have won awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for design excellence. The firm, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, has six offices on the East Coast: Shelton and Hartford, Conn.; Boston, Mass.; Somerset, N.J.; New York City and Naples, Fla.
