AIA-NJ Hosts Annual Awards Gala

Installs Officers and Honors Service and Design Award Winners

The New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ)  recently announced its 2013 officer class and honored its 2012 Service and Design award Winners, those who either demonstrated exceptional service to the architecture profession or produced outstanding design work.

AIA-NJ, based in Trenton, is the statewide chapter of the national AIA, which helps architects serve the public’s needs and builds awareness of the role of architects and architecture in American society. The AIA-NJ chapter has six local sections, which include Architects League of Northern New Jersey, Central Jersey, Newark and Suburban, Jersey Shore, South Jersey and West Jersey.

“One of my goals as president is to increase participation among young architects,” said Jack Purvis in his remarks as the 2013 AIA-NJ president. “Young architects are the future of the profession. As a young architect, I was fortunate enough to have extremely supportive mentors, which was extremely helpful for my development as an architect and leader. I’m challenging every member to become a mentor for AIA, whether it’s taking an intern to a section lunch or encouraging young architects to attend a meeting.”

2013 AIA-NJ Officers

Officers who were installed included Purvis, AIA, of Howell, N.J., who was installed as president; Kurt Kalafsky, AIA, of Howell, N.J., who was installed as president-elect; Kimberly Bunn, AIA, of Moorestown, N.J., who was installed as first vice president; Justin Mihalik, AIA, of Montclair, N.J., who was installed as second vice president; Laurence E. Parisi, AIA, of Fort Lee, N.J., who was installed as past president; Ben P. Lee, AIA, of Wayne, N.J., who was installed as treasurer; and Jason R. Peist, Assoc. AIA, of Nutley, N.J., who was installed as regional associate director.

Jerome Leslie Eben, AIA, of West Orange, N.J., began his third, final year in the position of regional director, while Verity Frizzell, AIA, of Bay Head, N.J., resumed her position as secretary for a second, final year.

2012 AIA-NJ Service Award Winners

Service Award honorees included Stephen J. Carlidge, AIA, of Ocean Grove, N.J., who was honored with the Distinguished Service Award; Spiezle Architectural Group, a Trenton, N.J.-based architecture firm, which was honored with the Architectural Firm of the Year Award; Rick Tokarski, AIA, of Brick Township, N.J., who was honored with the Architect of the Year Award; April Horvath, AIA, of Ocean Grove, N.J., who was honored with the Young Architect of the Year Award; Sarah Wolosin, associate AIA, of  Trenton, N.J., who was honored as Intern Architect of the Year; and Chanta Jackson, of Long Branch, N.J., who was honored as Resident of the Year.

2012 AIA-NJ Design Award Winners

Design Award honorees included Marchetto, Higgins Stieve Architects, a Hoboken, N.J.-based full-range architectural, planning and design services firm; the Princeton, N.J. office of HDR, a global architecture, engineering, consulting and construction firm; Shore Point Architecture, an architectural design firm based in Ocean Grove, N.J.; Studio Hillier, a Princeton, N.J.-based architecture, planning and design firm; Marina Rubina, Architect, a sole proprietor based in Princeton, N.J.; Beyer, Blinder & Belle Architects & Planners, a New York City-based architectural firm specializing in historic preservation, urban design, planning and transportation, in conjunction with STV, a New York City-based architectural, engineering, planning environmental and construction management services firm; ikon.5 architects, a Princeton, N.J.-based architecture and design firm; and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
