An EPiC Legacy: Four generations of Potter Architects

In October 2018, Matthew T. Potter, AIA, became a Registered Architect in New Jersey.  He is following his family’s tradition by becoming the 4th generation to join the profession.  Matthew’s great-grandfather, Stephen J. Potter, Emeritus AIA, graduated Yale University with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1930; started the family’s architectural practice, Potter Architects, LLC in 1932; became a NJ Licensed Architect in 1933 and was a member of AIA NJ until his death at 88 years old.  Matthew’s grandfather, Richard T. Potter, Emeritus AIA, graduated Syracuse University with a BArch in 1959, became a NJ Licensed Architect in 1962, and is still practicing with the firm at 83 years old.  Matthew’s father, Glen R. Potter, AIA, graduated from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) with a BArch in 1984 and became a NJ Licensed Architect in 1987.  Matthew’s uncle, Thomas R. Potter, AIA, graduated from NJIT with a BArch in 1986 and became a NJ Licensed Architect in 1989.  Thomas’ daughter, Sarah Potter, Associate AIA, graduated from the University of Miami with a BArch in 2018 and works as an Architectural Associate for LM Associates in Chicago.  Matthew graduated NJIT, Summa Cum Laude with a BArch in 2016.  Matthew currently works as an Architect for the HNTB Corporation in New York City.

The Potter Family is fast approaching the legacy of others families of architects like the 1930’s Wolf & Glucksman that became Glucksman and Guzzo that is now Guzzo & Guzzo; William Lehman Architects of 1896 that became Lehman Architectural Partnership in the early 1970’s; Frank Grad, Architect 1906, which became Frank Grad & son in the 1930’s and then Grad Partnership in the 1960’s.

AIA NJ is proud to recognize Matthew’s accomplishments and to congratulate the entire Potter family on this legacy. Matthew and Sarah’s achievements, while individually earned, rest on the shoulders of a century of family history and AIA New Jersey values.
