In March of this year, we found ourselves confronted with a new reality and were introduced to a “Stay at Home” policy for parents and children. This situation provided both a challenge and an opportunity. Parents were tasked to provide an educational experience with little practice and a need to entertain their children. Under these circumstances, those in the architecture community came to recognize that we might provide leadership in producing a resource parents could access to provide both education and entertainment. By developing such a resource, we could contribute to young people gaining a greater appreciation and an understanding of architecture. To this end, we developed an activity package and curriculum available to local communities and individuals to support the effort to educate and entertain through architecture. The document identified as the “Kid’s Home Architecture Camp” was the initial launch of this idea.

Review of the initial document by AIA National leaders resulted in the suggestion to reproduce this program as an initiative of the local chapter. Following discussions with Jodi van der Wiel, 2020 AIA Cleveland President, we began collaboration on a new version of this resource. The now titled, “Home Architecture Camp”, is a more robust and inclusive document with links to videos, greater depth on subjects and more insight into the introduction to architecture. Attached is the initial release of the new and improved version.

We hope this document can be shared with parents, educators, children, architects and others interested in the built environment. We are sure people will find its broad spectrum of programs in the areas of history, design, building, sustainability, drawing, coloring and creating to be an engaging and stimulating support for stay at home education.

We wish to acknowledge and thank AIA Cleveland for its support of the project. We, also, wish to recognize the following contributors who have helped to make this as valuable a resource as it can be:

Jeremy Smith, AIA of Bialosky Partners, Cleveland

Bruce Bondy of Bondy Studio Architectural Illustrations

Patrick Thorpe, AIA of Alledgedly Design and the Florida Foundation for Architecture

We hope you will enjoy it and make use of it. Feel free to share it with friends and contacts.
