AIA New Jersey Supports Sukkah Village 2021

The Sukkah Village 2021 exhibit and competition, taking place in Princeton New Jersey, offers participants the chance to present innovative and original designs for a Sukkah that can be built by an individual, using materials and building methods that are sustainable and easily available. Each project will need to include details explaining the building method, ensuring that the structure can be built and taken apart with tools readily available.

Sukkah commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, living in temporary shelters, and gives thanks for shelter and the yearly harvest. Sukkah is also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, or the Feast of Booths.

The word “sukkah” means “booths,” like the shelters the Jews lived in when they were travelling through the desert, or the shelters farmers use while gathering the harvest. During Sukkah, Jewish families build a temporary little hut or shelter in their yard, called a sukkah.

A board of AIA New Jersey Architects, community partners and local clergy will select winning design submissions which will receive a stipend of $1,800 to build their Sukkah.

AIA NJ Architecture firms and Architects, along with selected winners, will build their Sukkahs at the Sukkah Village event taking place in September 19-30, 2021 in Princeton NJ.
