AIA New Jersey Members Continue Their Legacy As New Jersey Steam Tank Judges at the 2024 Finals Competition

Joseph David, AIA, and Stacey Ruhle Kliesch, AIA, were back in Atlantic City at the NJSBA STEAM Tank Finals Competition at the New Jersey School Boards Association 2024 Workshop! AIA New Jersey – The New Jersey Society of Architects has provided mentors, judges and subject matter experts since the inception of the program nine years ago. Stacey and Joe volunteer annually and AIA NJ recognizes the team that most successfully solves a problem for the built environment.

Day one included the Final Presentations and Judging in the Elementary Division

Congratulations to these hard-working teams who took the top places as the Elementary School NJSBA STEAM Tank winners for 2024! Grand Prize winner Team Recall It! from Avenel School in Woodbridge, NJ, Team Door To Your Heart from Alice Costello Elementary School in second place and the Fentanyl Fighters of Knollwood Elementary School in third. All three teams were exceptional and really strong in #eq and #sel

Elementary 1st place – Woodbridge G & T at Avenel Middle – Team Recall It – $2500

This team of compassionate innovators from Woodbridge, NJ Gifted and Talented program at Avenel Middle School created a customizable memory game, “Recall it,” to support loved ones with #dementia and #alzheimers. It’s available as a deck of cards or an electronic app. Brilliant!

Elementary 2nd place – Alice Costello Elementary – Team Door to your Heart App team – $1500

Check out the Door To Your Heart App! After an initial effort to physically modify their school building to accommodate the needs of an individual in their classroom, a team of elementary school humanitarians developed this app to educate their community on the myriad of challenges that others in our society are dealing with. Their goal is to create a ripple effect of ACTION to improve the lives of everyone! Congratulations Alice Costello Elementary School STEAM Tank Team Door to your Heart!

Elementary 3rd place – Knollwood School – Team Fentanyl Fighters- $1000

Team #FentanylFighters from Knollwood Elementary School in Fairhaven, New Jersey has created educational videos, lesson plans and virtual field trips to try to short-circuit the downward spiral into drug addiction and the fentanyl epidemic. They even teamed up local & county law enforcement to spread their message. Fantastic resources!

Day two included the Final Presentations and Judging in the Middle School Division

The Middle School Finalists amazed the judges with their creativity, ingenuity and enthusiasm. Each team had developed a prototype and proven results. Absolutely remarkable showing at the NJ School Board Association STEAM Tank 2024 Middle School Finals. AIA NJ is proud to support this annual competition.

Middle School 1st place – Hartford Upper Elementary- Team Mute Assistance Speech Communicator- $2,500

This pair of young women developed a medical barrier face mask and headset that each can read the lips of the wearer, translate and announce the words of the speaker. This brilliant device could also be used for translation and more. Look for this item in stores in the future.

Middle School 2nd place – Demarest Middle School – Nurse Assist – $1,500

These remarkable entrepreneurs have created an apparatus to independently conduct medical intake evaluations like gathering height, weight, blood pressure, pulse and more. The time and money that can be saved by freeing up skilled medical professionals for more important tasks will have a major impact on healthcare. What an exciting strategy to support the nursing shortage in the US.

Middle School 3rd place – PS #28 -Jersey City -Compost Coalition $1,000

This team’s school was ice cold due to a heating system overdue for an overhaul. These inventive scientists developed the technology to take school waste like coffee grinds and paper due for recycling, composting it and heating individual classrooms. Revolutionary!

From NJSBA: A big thank you to AIA New Jersey – The New Jersey Society of Architects Stacey Ruhle Kliesch & Joe David who have volunteered as NJSBA STEAM Tank judges since the inception of the program!
