AIA New Jersey Member Honored by Preservation New Jersey

Stephen W. Schwartz, AlA, established and headed the firm SWS Architects for 53 years, until his recent retirement. About 25 years ago he was asked to explain to a class of second-grade students how a city is designed. Loaded up with AIA New Jersey’s collection of #LEGO building blocks from the 1993 AIA National Convention in Washington, D.C., he set out to give the students a lesson in zoning by building a city the size of their classroom.

Ten years later, the Montclair Historical Society was looking to create a family program on the rich architectural history of #Montclair. What developed was a dynamic program method that Schwartz has designed for historic societies in #NewJersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

AIA Newark and Suburban member Schwartz was honored by Preservation New Jersey at the 2024 New Jersey Historic Preservation awards for the development of this program which brings the importance of architecture and understanding its value to the community to the classroom. #historicpreservation #njhistory #community
