On Tuesday, August 5th, the Architects League of Northern New Jersey (ALNNJ), a section of the American Institute of Architects New Jersey Chapter (AIA-NJ), had the privilege of visiting Passaic County Community College (PCCC) to engage with students curious about the world of architecture. The event was more than just a presentation—it was a conversation, a spark, and a glimpse into the creative and technical journey that defines our profession.
Through a dynamic and visually rich PowerPoint presentation, ALNNJ representative William J. Martin, AIA, shared key insights into what it takes to become an architect—from the first inklings of interest in high school to the rigorous path toward licensure. The goal? To demystify the profession and empower students with the knowledge they need to take their next steps with confidence.
What Students Discovered
The one-hour presentation covered a wide range of topics, tailored to meet the needs of students where they are in their academic journey:
What the AIA Is—and Why It Matters
Students learned about the AIA’s support for architects through advocacy, education, and community engagement, and how membership can open doors to mentorship and professional growth opportunities.
What Architects Actually Do
From designing homes and hospitals to shaping public spaces and policy, students got a clearer picture of the diverse roles architects play in society.
Education Pathways & Timeframes
We broke down the academic roadmap—highlighting the difference between programs, the importance of accredited schools, and what to expect in terms of time and commitment.
Skills That Land That First Job
Beyond design and computer software, ALNNJ emphasized communication, collaboration, and curiosity as essential traits for emerging professionals.
Architecture’s Role in Global Challenges
Students explored how architects are tackling climate change, affordable housing, and equity in the built environment—proving that design is not just aesthetic, but ethical.
Why Architecture Is a Deeply Rewarding Career
We closed with stories of impact—how architecture shapes lives, communities, and futures. The message was clear: this is a profession where passion meets purpose.
A Shared Moment of Inspiration
Students asked thoughtful questions, shared their aspirations, and engaged in ways that reminded us why outreach like this matters. It’s not just about recruiting future professionals—it’s about planting seeds of possibility.
The AIA Architects League of Northern NJ is deeply grateful to Passaic County Community College and Program & Career Coordinator, Shari Piontkowskie-Espinal, for hosting us, and to the students for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and openness. The future of architecture is in good hands.
Let’s keep building it—together.
