In Celebration of the Life and Progress of Louise Blanchard Bethune, FAIA

Born on this day in 1856, Louise Blanchard Bethune was the first American woman known to have worked as a professional architect, the first woman member of the American Institute of Architects and the first woman Fellow of the AIA. She was born in Waterloo, New York. Blanchard worked primarily in Buffalo, New York at Bethune, Bethune & Fuchs. Her work includes the Hotel Lafayette. She rests in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY.
