Act Today to Support Freedom in Design
Architects understand that design choices shape how people interact with public spaces—and those choices should reflect the needs, values, and character of the communities they serve. When the federal government imposes narrow design mandates, such as requiring neoclassical styles for public buildings, it limits innovation, sustainability, and local input.
Instead, federal building design should be guided by professional expertise, community voices, and forward-looking principles like resilience and accessibility. Congress has the power to protect design freedom and promote policies that reflect modern challenges and opportunities. AIA members: tell your lawmakers that architects—and communities—deserve a voice in shaping the future of our built environment.
