AIA New Jersey Equity and Women In Architecture Bring a Packed House to Meet Pascale Sablan, FAIA, NOMAC, LEED AP

 

On Monday, May 12th, 2025, the AIA New Jersey Equity and Women in Architecture Committees, with the support of NOMA New Jersey, welcomed over 40 people to meet the inspirational Pascale Sablan, FAIA, NOMAC, LEED AP, NOMA Global President 2023-24. The AIA Equity and the Future of Architecture Committee Member presented her new book, GREATNESS: Diverse Designers of Architecture and offered a book signing. The event was held at the Ulrich, Inc. Showroom in Ridgewood, NJ. They also sponsored a bountiful cocktail hour. Ulrich’s Linda Alvino and Nivy Trama welcomed guests and offered showroom tours.

Linda and Nivy shared that they were thrilled to have Ms. Sablan and all of the AIA members in the showroom. They appreciated Pascale’s hard work, passion, and enthusiasm in support of future and budding, as well as the already successful architects whose stories she has made known to a greater audience! 

They offered special thanks to Stacey for making such tremendous events possible with her hard work and energy! Last but not least, to ALL attendees, the Ulrich showroom and staff are available for future collaborations and events, as always!

After opening remarks from NOMA NJ President Taylor Latimer, Associate AIA, and AIA NJ President Andrew Thompson, AIA, NOMAC, visionary architect and activist Pascale Sablan, FAIA, NOMAC, LEED AP, winner of the 2021 AIA Whitney M. Young Award, introduced her traveling exhibit SAY IT LOUD!, coming soon to Kean University. 
 
Pascale Sablan guided attendees through an exploration of the past (oppressive systems in design), the present (initiatives for equity), and the future (a vision for justice and representation in the built environment). As the founder of Beyond the Built Environment, Pascale has created a platform that elevates the work of women and BIPOC professionals and empowers communities through inclusive design.

Guests learned about systemic erasure and its impact on diversity in the profession, tools to make professional practice more just, equitable, and inclusive, advocacy organizations supporting underrepresented professionals and empowerment strategies through design.

Pascale Sablan, FAIA, NOMAC, LEED AP, is a visionary architect and CEO of Adjaye Associates, New York studio. As the 315th living African American woman registered architect in the U.S., Pascale embodies excellence, innovation, and sustainability. She founded Beyond the Built Environment to empower women and BIPOC designers, and she recently served as the Global President of the National Organization of Minority Architects (2023–2024), becoming the fifth woman to hold this role.

Pascale’s advocacy has earned her the Architectural League 2021 Emerging Voices award and the 2021 AIA Whitney M. Young Jr. Award. She is the youngest African American inducted into the AIA College of Fellows. Pascale has lectured at RIBA, the United Nations, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, NPR, and Forbes, and she was recognized by Oprah’s Future Rising platform. With degrees from Pratt Institute and Columbia University, Pascale Sablan is shaping the future of architecture.
