Jun Seong Ahn is a Senior Urban Planner with SOM, based in New York, committed to shaping sustainable, inclusive, and resilient cities. He has worked with government agencies, universities, transit agencies, private developers, and community boards globally, and brings a multidisciplinary lens to complex planning challenges. At SOM, Jun has led award-winning master plans and strategic frameworks across the U.S., Middle East, Asia, and Africa, focusing on climate resilience, decarbonization, and community-driven design.

Session Information:

As cities are confronting urban, climate, mobility and equity challenges through smart technologies, defining “smart” urbanism has become more important than ever before. This session introduces how to design urban systems that empower communities through providing tools, access, and agency. Two case studies will be introduced to illustrate the process, the Hoboken Yard Redevelopment Plan and Richmond’s Diamond District, and participants will learn how embedding awareness in the urban fabric through thoughtful design, active communication, and community engagement allow communities to better encounter to climate, mobility, and housing challenges.
