Last month, the U.S. Department of Education announced it would reclassify architecture as a non-“professional degree” for federal student loan purposes, a decision made under the terms of the “One Big Beautiful Bill”. This change is set to take effect in July 2026 and will impact federal loan borrowing limits for architecture students. The reclassification does not affect architectural licensure, only eligibility for specific loan programs, which is not without impact.
