The AIA Conference on Design A’26, in San Diego, California, will be remembered for many reasons, but one of its most memorable highlights was the lively presence of Flat Architect. What began as a playful idea in 2020 quickly became a symbol of camaraderie, creativity, and connection across the architecture community. This year’s gathering demonstrated how lighthearted concepts can spark meaningful engagement and strengthen professional bonds.

AIA New Jersey made a strong impression with its energetic and collaborative presence. Among its standout contributors were Chris Brand and Mike Rosado, who introduced the first-ever #FlatArchitect from the AIA College of Fellows. Their vision transformed a simple novelty into a celebration of fellowship. Through thoughtful planning and contagious enthusiasm, they created fresh opportunities for members to interact in ways that transcended traditional conference formats, showcasing the innovative thinking that defines architectural practice.
Mike Rosado, Associate AIA, said, “I enjoyed participating in the FlatArchitect initiative. It was fun to see who I could photobomb and a creative way to spark new conversations with people throughout the conference.”
Special thanks go to Verity Frizzell, FAIA, who embraced the campaign by “going Flat” for the photo series. Her 2-dimensional participation added warmth and authenticity, resulting in images that captured fun, friendship, and professional pride. These photos now serve as lasting reminders that architecture is not only about designing buildings but also about the people and relationships that sustain the profession through our membership in the AIA.
Our own AIA NJ President and new Fellow Jessica O’Donnell, FAIA, joined in on the “flat-stivities.”
Extra gratitude is due to AIA National President Illya Azzaroff, FAIA, whose enthusiastic support elevated the entire initiative. His involvement underscored that leadership includes openness to joy, creativity, and unconventional ways of connecting, bridging national leadership with grassroots energy.
The success of #FlatArchitect reflects broader themes in the profession: holistic engagement, emotional intelligence, inclusivity, and the importance of human connection. Amid complex challenges—from sustainability to social equity—this initiative reminded attendees of the value of playfulness and shared experience.
Beyond the campaign, the conference itself fostered rich dialogue, new partnerships, and renewed inspiration.
Thanks to the leadership of O’Donnell, Brand, Rosado, Frizzell, AIA President Azzaroff, and the entire AIA New Jersey contingent, AIA26 struck an ideal balance between professional development and personal connection—setting a tone for future gatherings and stronger architectural communities.
