LECTURE: New Residential Colleges Built for Community
How can notions of scale and materiality on a historic campus be negotiated with contemporary design? How can relationships between indoors and outdoors be configured? Maitland Jones and his team at TenBerke asked these questions with their ambitious design for Princeton University’s two newest residential colleges. As a component of campus-wide growth strategies and part of Princeton’s residential college tradition, the new colleges give architectural expression to the ongoing commitment to inclusion and belonging. TenBerke’s design creates a dialogue between architecture and landscape that builds community and is sensitive to traditional campus space-making. Mait will discuss how his team created a richness of experiences and a sense of inclusivity for students by implementing skillful siting, massing, and universal access.
