AIANS Book Club: City of Light
AIANS Book Club: City of Light
Join us for our next Book Club meeting as we discuss City of Light: The Making of Modern Paris by Rupert Christiansen!
This vivid and engaging history traces the sweeping transformation of Paris beginning in 1853, when Louis Napoleon launched an ambitious public works program led by Georges-Eugène Haussmann. Over fifteen dramatic years—through war, revolution, corruption, and near-bankruptcy—the old medieval maze of slums and narrow alleyways was reshaped into the modern Paris we recognize today: grand boulevards, elegant apartment blocks, parks, squares, rail stations, monuments, and a groundbreaking sanitation system.
City of Light offers a fascinating look at how one of the world’s most iconic cities came to be—and why Haussmann’s vision set the template for urban planning across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
