In 1993, I became a member of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), and in 1999, I joined the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Since then, I have been an active member of both organizations, regularly participating in local meetings and national conferences. From 2007 to 2009, I served as president of the New York Coalition of Black Architects (NYCOBA-NOMA). In 2020, I held the role of president of AIA Newark and Suburban Architects. I have been a member of AIA Brooklyn, AIA New York, and, more recently, AIA New Jersey.

In October 2024, I attended the NOMA Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, where I presented a seminar on my role as Passaic County Architect and led a panel discussion on the history of the NOMA Council (NOMAC). NOMAC, which includes myself and William Brown III, FAIA, as members, is composed of former NOMA Presidents and individuals who have made significant, long-term contributions to the organization. The conference was a resounding success, attracting a record-breaking attendance of over 1,500 architects, emerging professionals, and students. Many of these students are members of NOMAS chapters at their universities and architecture schools, with numerous attendees also being members of AIAS.

NOMA’s board leadership is both youthful and highly accomplished, with Kimberly Dowdell, the current President of AIA, having also served as NOMA’s President. The conference covers a range of important topics, such as the design challenges faced by disadvantaged communities, the integration of African American history in design, and mentoring students entering the profession.

I always hear from attendees that the NOMA conference has the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a family reunion.

As I look ahead to 2025, when I will assume the role of President of AIA New Jersey, I reflect on how my NOMA roots have shaped my leadership approach and deepened my commitment to advocacy in the architectural profession.
