Earlier this year, Bruce Turner, AIA, and Ron Weston, AIA, began a conversation with the AIA New Jersey Public Awareness Committee about ways in which our organization might leverage the excitement around the FIFA World Cup 26.
We have formed an Ad Hoc Task Force to help plan and implement AIA-NJ World Cup 2026 events and programs with our state chapter and local section components.
For fans of soccer like us, the anticipation is now palpable as the roadmap for the World Cup is set with the 48 national teams from around the globe selected and the schedule announced. The teams will compete for over five weeks this June 11th through July 19th, 2026, in matches played in 16 North American host cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Our state is poised to host an incredible eight matches at MetLife Stadium (referred to during the tournament as the “New York New Jersey Stadium”), including the final match on July 19th. Many area fans will also follow or attend one of the six matches being hosted at the Lincoln Financial Field stadium in neighboring Philadelphia, just across the Delaware River from New Jersey.
We have begun planning educational, informational, and social media outreach aligned with this popular global sporting event. By celebrating the intersection of architecture and the World Cup, AIA-NJ hopes to inspire expanded public awareness about design’s vital role in our communities, which shapes the many buildings, places, and spaces that events like the World Cup depend upon.
The range of AIA-NJ World Cup 2026 engagement we plan includes the spring “Architecture Week K-12 Stadium Design Competition” for students; publication of community and sports-themed articles and media posts; and educational talks, tours, or webinars for member and public audiences. Of course, we want to celebrate and have fun as well through social events and watch parties that will allow AIA-NJ member architects to network and share the experience of the world’s most popular sport with professional colleagues.
