AIA New Jersey Young Architect of the Year Angelica Arent, AIA, Featured at Inaugural Latinas in Architecture Summit
Speaking at this groundbreaking event alongside Latina architects from across the country has been both a historic and profoundly memorable experience. The two-day Summit was filled with laughter, heartfelt moments, and women uplifting and empowering one another.
The Summit commenced with the inspiring motto of Arquitina, “Lift as we climb,” as Monica Ponce de León, Dean of the School of Architecture, introduced Alicia Ponce – founder of Arquitina and author of “Latinas in Architecture: Volume I, Volume II”, and the upcoming
“Volume III”, set to release this summer.

Over 45 presentations graced the event, each showcasing a unique and deeply personal journey in architecture, making the Summit truly one of a kind.
While the primary focus was on architecture, the stories shared during the Summit highlighted the diversity of educational and professional paths. From foreign degrees and licenses to accredited programs, the speakers reflected on the challenges many faced on their journey to
licensure.
Attendees included firm owners, partners, principals, award-winning architects, associates, and American Institute of Architects Fellows, all sharing impactful stories.
Despite each narrative being distinct, there were powerful common threads that united us – strong mothers and family ties, stories of migration, advocacy for ourselves and others and making a difference within our communities through service and practice.

The Summit was an unforgettable and inspiring experience, as we came together to celebrate the strength and resilience of Latina architects who are making significant contributions across the nation.
It was particularly meaningful that the event took place during the closing weekend of Women’s History Month – serving as a tribute to launch a movement that amplifies the voices of Latinas in architecture and paves the way for future generations.
