On October 4, 2025, the Union Congregational Church in Upper Montclair, NJ, was abuzz with excitement, laughter, and the happy barks (and purrs!) of our four-legged friends as AIA Newark & Suburban Architects (AIANS) hosted its inaugural Barkitecture event.

This unique, pet-centric design competition brought together architects, designers, contractors, families, and animal lovers from across our region for an afternoon that truly embodied creativity, compassion, and community spirit.

Each piece—built with care and imagination—was accompanied by a presentation board detailing the inspiration, materials, and features, making it clear just how much thought and passion went into every entry. Not only were these structures a feast for the eyes, but they also represented a commitment to supporting local animal welfare.

What made Barkitecture even more special was its family- and dog-friendly atmosphere. Guests of all ages—humans and canines alike—enjoyed interactive sponsor booths, delicious treats, and the chance to mingle with representatives from Rescue Haven Foundation, PAWS Montclair, and Associated Humane Societies of Newark. Knowing that 100% of the net proceeds went directly to these incredible non-profits added an extra layer of heart to the festivities.
