Planning, Design, Construction & Logistics Presentation and Walking Tour of the Vertical Expansion of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset Pavilion Building
Array Architects will present and lead a walking tour about the 76,000-square-foot vertical expansion project of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset Pavilion Building, located on the main hospital campus in Somerville, NJ. The vertical expansion above the hospital’s existing Orthopedics Pavilion and Emergency Department building includes its Orthopedic Center of Excellence, a 35-bed inpatient unit featuring all-private rooms and a rehabilitation gym. It will also house a 10-room Rapid Decision Unit for Emergency Department patients who require additional observation.
The design and construction a new the two-story addition over the existing structure which was originally designed to support future vertical expansion, is the most significant construction project on the hospital’s campus since 2007. The second floor is shelled space for future fitout, while the third floor is private patient rooms. The third floor also includes a Joint Studio for orthopedic inpatient rehabilitation, and required patient, clinical, staff, and public support spaces. A new Connector Corridor was created so that patients travel directly from the existing Surgical Department to the new unit. To enable this, the existing PACU Suite required renovation. The Connector Corridor has a dedicated patient transfer elevator to bridge the difference in floor heights between the new addition and the existing facility.
Construction began on the vertical expansion with the raising of the first steel beam in December 2022. The final steel beam was raised in February 2023. The facility will open to patients by early 2025.
The presentation will review the program and associated adjacencies, key design drivers, significant infrastructure, project progress during the pandemic as well as construction logistics in order to maintain operations beneath the construction zone and coordination with state and local authorities having jurisdiction.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will gain an understanding of the program components and design drivers, adjacencies and operational relationships critical to support patient care and FGI compliance.
- Participants will learn about challenges and opportunities associated with developing the project in a post pandemic era including working in a virtual healthcare environment, supply chain and construction impact
- Participants will be introduced to key planning components, infrastructure, code and FGI compliance, technology, coordination with state and local AHJs as well as construction and operational logistics associated with an overbuild project
- Lessons learned will be reviewed in order to provide participants with resources for their own healthcare related projects
