• Designing for Resilience: Community-Centered Housing, Climate, and Social Infrastructure

1 HSW The AIA New Jersey Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Committee serves as a resource for AIA members, the profession, and the public on the evolving role of technology in architectural practice and design. As part of this mission, TAP is delighted to present a webinar featuring Hilary Sample, FAIA, Principal of MOS Architects, New York. In this engaging lecture, Hilary Sample, FAIA, will explore how housing, educational environments, and public space can work together to strengthen communities while responding to climate, culture, and changing patterns of daily life. Throughout the webinar, Hilary will examine how adaptable housing models, climate-responsive design strategies, passive environmental systems, and thoughtful urban interventions can support occupant wellness, affordability, accessibility, and long-term neighborhood vitality. From stormwater management and pedestrian circulation to the integration of landscape, local materials, and social infrastructure, this lecture will highlight the power of architecture to create spaces that are both environmentally responsive and deeply rooted in community identity.

Through real-world examples, the session will highlight common pitfalls found in drawing notes and demonstrate how unclear language can impact project outcomes, timelines, and budgets. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the legal and practical distinctions between enforceable specifications and informal note-based communication. The webinar will also introduce structured documentation approaches tailored to small firm workflows, helping practitioners streamline their specifications without sacrificing rigor. Emphasis will be placed on reducing ambiguity, improving coordination across project teams, and clearly communicating design intent to contractors and code officials.
