RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Eligibility:

Architects-The program is open to registered architects who are regular members or professional associate members in good standing of AIA Newark and Suburban Architects.  Submissions can be by members in a joint venture (JV)  with another firm, however, both parties to the joint venture must be directly involved in the design process, from start to finish, i.e. the Design Architect not the Architect of Record.

Students and Unlicensed Emerging Professionals-The program is open to students of NJIT and Kean University who are currently enrolled in the architecture program or graduates pursuing licensure. The projects may be of any size or building type.  These projects will be judged separately from the architects.

Built By– All projects must have been built or designed (if unbuilt) after January 1, 2018.

Resubmission– Projects that meet the Built-By date requirement that have been previously submitted may be resubmitted only if they didn’t receive any rewards or commendation in previous design awards programs.

Categories

Residential:  are new construction (stand-alone or additions) that are single family residential projects.  If the focus or highlight of the project is an featured element, interior or historic preservation see other categories below.

Commercial:  are new construction (stand-alone or additions) that are designed or built for business clients such as offices, retail, restaurants, multi-family housing, etc.

Institutional:  are new construction (stand-alone or additions) that are designed or built for religious, government or educational clients.

Historic Preservation:  are projects of any type (of limited scope or entire building) where the design specialization is restoration or preservation of buildings.  Projects can be pure restoration of  buildings designated by national, state or local standards as historically significant or projects can be buildings that have fallen into disrepair and are being adapted to a new use.

Featured Element:  are residential or non-residential limited exterior design elements and details that demonstrate unique design qualities and address specialized design challenges for entry, light, weather, environment etc.

Interior: are residential or non-residential interior architectural designs that feature finishes like millwork, casework and/or individual rooms like lobbies, courtrooms, classrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, stairs, windows, ceilings, or other spaces.

Submission Requirements

  • Submissions are to be formatted for printing on 40” x 40” boards
  • Printed boards are required, in addition to JPG board submissions via our electronic forms
  • The entry must be submitted as JPG documents in 2 separate files. Files must be titled with the version name:
    • “Jurors’ Version” must have all names or references to your firm removed.
    • “Presentation Version” may have all your firm’s name and logos included. The Presentation Version should have the name/logo of the architect located in the bottom 2” of the board.
  • All versions of boards should feature:
    • the name of the project,
    • if it is built or un-built,
    • the location,
    • a description of the project,
    • text as to the unique challenges and response,
    • dates of construction or design.

It is strongly recommended (but not required) to limit text and focus on descriptions of the design challenge and the architect’s specific response – avoid text focused on marketing.  Boards are most successful when they are accompanied by site and floor plans, conceptual diagrams, sections, select details, and (if possible) photographs.  (Provide credits for all photographs.)  Colored CAD drawings are customary, but hand drawing, paintings, models and renderings can help set projects apart.

Jurors and Judging:

The jury shall be comprised of distinguished professionals from around the region or the country.  All jurors shall recuse themselves if they have prior prejudicial knowledge of the project or the architect / student responsible for the design.  The jury shall be sent the “Jurors’ Version” of all the projects electronically.  The deliberations will be moderated by the Design Awards chairperson who will provide basic guidelines.  The criteria for awards will be left to the jurors’ experience and discretion.  There will be no requirements for the number or level of awards in any category.

Awards:

Projects may be recategorized by jurors based on nature and number of entries.

Participants must pick one category that best represents the entry or client.  Not all categories are awarded.  The registration form must indicate if the project is built or unbuilt.

Architects whose projects are selected for recognition will be awarded with an AIANS insignia medal and ribbon ranked Gold, Silver, or Bronze along with a certificate, or a printed certificate of recognition for Merit.

Student projects are not building type specific.  They have been selected by the faculty as representative of the best student work of the past year from any studio in their program.  The submissions are limited to 6 projects from each institution.  Students are awarded a certificate and a cash prize from a total purse of $2,000 that will be divided at the juror’s discretion.
