As part of Princeton’s Nassau Street Streetscape Project, the Municipality sought innovative design solutions for a new, purpose-built information kiosk to serve as a vital civic and wayfinding hub at the heart of the community. In partnership with AIA New Jersey, the Municipality launched the submission process for the Princeton Kiosk Design Competition, inviting professional architects and students to help shape the future of downtown Princeton through thoughtful, functional, and sustainable design. Many thanks to the Bank of Princeton and Roundview Capital for sponsoring the competition with cash prizes. Princeton’s Public Library is hosting an exhibit in the lobby showcasing finalists for the new downtown civic information kiosk design, part of the Nassau Street Streetscape Project to modernize wayfinding and community info, featuring digital screens and flyer space, with designs blending classic charm and modern tech, aiming for a functional, community-focused hub after a competition organized by AIA-NJ and sponsored by local businesses.
The Competition & Project
The goal of the project is to replace outdated kiosks with modern, functional hubs for wayfinding, local events, and community resources. Bank of Princeton and Roundview Capital sponsored a $10,000 prize for the winning design. The American Institute of Architects of New Jersey (AIA-NJ) managed the competition for architects and students.
Design requirements included the use of durable materials, digital touchscreens, bulletin space, QR codes, and potential solar/ambient lighting.
Designs submitted range from open, inviting structures encouraging pedestrian flow to concepts blending Parisian ambiance with modern tech. Features include digital info screens, analog poster space, and designs that accommodate future expansion.
The winning design will be selected, with construction potentially starting after council review, with plans to expand the hybrid (digital/analog) model to other locations.
You are invited to choose your favorite design for the People’s Choice Award!
