AIA New Jersey Leader Shares Scenes from the 2026 AIA National Conference

June 17, 2026

The AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2026 (AIA26) was a four-day AEC event held from June 10-13, 2026, at the San Diego Convention Center. The conference drew over 5,000 industry professionals to explore the future of design through hundreds of classes, landmark tours, and an expansive trade expo.

AIA Architects League Past President Joseph David, AIA, attended the conference and shares his experience…

“I arrived early and stayed late to maximize my experience in San Diego and at AIA26, focusing my time mostly on tours and experiences.

Cuatro Cuatros

The best tour at AIA26 wasn’t in San Diego but instead was an all-day tour to Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, Mexico, to see Cuatro Cuatros. The tour included visits to four private houses, a hotel, a restaurant with Pacific Ocean views, and a pavilion at the vineyards, all emphasizing steel, timber, stone, and exposed concrete in buildings designed by some of the best architectural firms in Mexico.

California Tower

Opened in 1915 and designed by Bertram Goodhue, the California Tower hovers over all of the museums and gardens in Balboa Park. I was able to take a tour that took us up the 125 steps to see great views of the park and the city, as well as the recently installed seismic bracing that, at least according to the guide, makes the historic tower one of the safest places to be in San Diego.

Geisel Library

The iconic Geisel Library at the UC San Diego was designed by William Pereira and opened in 1970. Inside the building is more than the tower; it also has two stories of partially underground spaces with skylights and open courtyards of reflective glass. You can explore the building on your own, so I made sure to visit all 8 levels and take as many pictures as I could.

San Diego Central Library

The San Diego Central Library was designed by local San Diego architect Rob Wellington Quigley, who is so local his office is just a few blocks away and within sight of the building. Another great building to explore, starting with the open roof deck with great views of the city.

Petco Park

I was lucky enough to get good seats to see a Padres baseball game at Petco Park, the downtown stadium designed by Antoine Predock. The stadium often is listed as the best in baseball and after seeing a game there, I understand why.”

In addition, Mr. David was selected to present at AIA26 in San Diego as part of the “Building the Architecture Pipeline” workshop! Joe’s longstanding commitment to architectural education and K-12 outreach has helped introduce countless students to the profession. We’re proud to see his work and leadership recognized on the national stage!
