The AIA NJ Licensing Advisor and Young Architect Representative, Abigail Benjamin, AIA, CNU-A, NCARB, spoke on succession planning as an integral part of career development at the recent American Institute of Architects National Conference in San Diego, AIA26. We spoke about the need to identify the next generation of leaders and consistently pull up team members to fill our own shoes as our careers evolve. From Licensed to Leading: The Business Skills That Shape the Next 10 Years brought together architects licensed 10 years or less for an engaging discussion on the business knowledge and strategic thinking needed to advance into leadership roles. Presented by the YAF Knowledge Workgroup alongside Pam Touschner (DLR Group, Large Firm Round Table), Tim Barnhill (HCM, Large Firm Round Table), and Will Teass (Teass\Warren Architects, Small Firm Exchange), the interactive workshop explored topics including strategic and operational initiatives, change and growth management, succession planning, building partnerships, and collaborating across firms. Through candid insights from experienced firm leaders, attendees gained practical resources and actionable strategies to help shape the next stage of their careers.
