ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL LINE-UP

“Eye Over Prague” to Open Festival at Tribeca Cinemas from October 14 – 17, 2010

The screening schedule has been finalized for the groundbreaking New York Architecture & Design Film Festival, the first of its kind in the United States. From many impressive entries, nearly forty films have been selected for this four-day, design-packed event in New York City, bringing together films, filmmakers, and leaders in the world of architecture and design.

“We’re delighted with the final roster of films,” says Kyle Bergman, architect and festival co-director. “They cover an incredible range of design-oriented topics, from architecture and urban design to graphics and product design. As we like to say, ‘Design Directs Everything.’ We’ve got films on pioneers in architecture and design from the middle of the last century, including graphic designer Herbert Matter, an almost forgotten genius; Lucienne and Robin Day, often called the Charles and Ray Eames of Britain; and Julius Shulman, the renowned architectural photographer. Then we take audiences to the present with films like Studio Gang Architects: Aqua Tower, about an amazing Chicago firm founded in 1997 by architect Jeanne Gang. ”

Added festival co-director Laura Cardello, “We’re really excited to host the international premiere of Eye Over Prague, a documentary dedicated to the late Czech architect Jan Kaplický, co-founder of the London-based, internationally acclaimed practice Future Systems.”

A just-completed film about legendary Yale professor Vincent Scully (Vincent Scully: An Art Historian Among Architects) will be sure to draw large crowds of fans eager to honor the best-known living art historian in the U.S. Space Land And Time: Underground Adventures With Ant Farm delves into the work of the renegade 1970s art/architecture collective Ant Farm, best known for its iconic land-art piece Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX. My Playground, another highlight of the festival, explores the way Parkour and Freerunning are changing the perception of urban space. Other offerings include: Citizen Architect–Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio; The Art and Science of Renzo Piano; Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight; and Malls R’ Us. There will also be short films by known and unknown filmmakers, including one by Eames Demetrios, grandson of American designers Charles and Ray Eames, and another on the Kimbell Art Museum in Ft. Worth, TX, considered one of architect Louis Kahn’s greatest buildings.

The festival’s lead sponsors are HSBC Private Bank, Sciame Construction, and Scavolini. The advisory board is comprised of undisputed experts in their fields, who will be on hand throughout the festival, many of them moderating panel discussions following the films: Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, Museum of Modern Art; Amanda Burden, Chair, New York City Planning Commission and Director of the Department of City Planning; Paul Goldberger, Architecture Critic, The New Yorker; Thomas Krens, Former Director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; Richard Meier, Managing Partner, Richard Meier & Partners Architects; Joseph Mizzi, President, Sciame Construction; William Moggridge, Director, Smithsonian, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; and Robert A.M. Stern, Dean, Yale School of Architecture.
