The Value Of The Architect Series Seeks Contributors from AIA New Jersey

According to the New Jersey Administrative Code, ARCHITECTS are the only professionals, “through education, training and experience, skilled in the art and science of building design, that are licensed to practice architecture in New Jersey.”

“The Practice of Architecture” means “providing of services in connection with the design, construction, enlargement, or alteration of a building or group of buildings and the spaces within and surrounding those buildings, that are for human use or habitations.”

“The VALUE of the ARCHITECT: Designing Value” is a series of articles promoted by the AIA New Jersey Public Awareness Committee. The mission of the series is to educate the public and inform a select, targeted, audience of those that work with architects, deal with the subject of architecture, and affect the professional practice of architecture on the value to be gained by working with an architect.

The Committee is seeking AIA New Jersey members to participate in this important initiative. The series is to initially focus on how architectural design creates “Economic Value.”

For example, design principles such as building area efficiency, low net to gross square foot add on factors, building shape, building orientation column spacing, floor to floor heights, use of low maintenance materials, roofing systems and interior finishes all contribute to creating “Economic Value” and can apply to a wide range of project types.

“Economic Value” is created by maximizing useable program areas while minimizing overall gross building areas, INCREASING building use and revenues while REDUCING total building costs.  Site development projects that maximize land use, also create “Economic Value.” Sustainable and energy-efficient projects, that use natural light, roof overhangs, high-value insulation and building plan orientation also provide “Economic Value” by reducing owning and operational costs.

This is an opportunity for members to increase public awareness of The VALUE of the ARCHITECT while presenting their projects, built or conceptual, that demonstrate adding economic value to their client.

Interested members should submit projects and articles to Stacey Kliesch, AIA, at staceykliesch@gmail.com as soon as possible to be considered. Articles should be word documents, 1000 words or less, and include separate jpgs of project photos and a square or landscape-oriented headshot of the AIA NJ member writing. All photographs must include a caption and give credit to the owner of the photograph and/ or photographer. The submitter grants AIA New Jersey permission to use the content of the article and the photographs if selected. An editorial team will evaluate all submissions for alignment with the ideals of AIA New Jersey and this initiative. Edits by the editorial team will not be returned to the submitter for final approval.
