  • 2024 AIANJ Fellowship Seminar

    Advancement to the AIA College of Fellows recognizes achievement in design, preservation, practice, education, literature and service. It honors architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Approximately 3% of AIA members have achieved this honor, which is the highest award given to individuals other than the Gold Medal. To be eligible, you must have completed ten cumulative years as an AIA member in good standing by the October deadline.   The nomination and application process requires significant effort, and our AIANJ Fellowship Committee has volunteered to provide advice and guidance. The online application opens in June and closes in October (dates to be announced). However, if you’re interested in applying, you should start planning now.  The Seminar will focus on the FELLOWSHIP PROCESS, including selecting an OBJECT, choosing your SPONSOR, NOMINATION and SUBMISSION. The presentation will also include a checklist of SUPPORT that the Committee can provide to candidates.  After we introduce the topic, Karen Nichols, FAIA, a former member and chair of the Jury of Fellows, will present the AIA’s Submitting for Fellowship program. New York Rd Galloway, NJ 08205 PRESENTATION: Building the Contagious Disease Hospital at Ellis Island: Hospital design, materials, and methods from 1900 - 1915 PRESENTERS: Jennifer Arnoldi, AIA, Senior Associate at Mills + Schnoering Architects, LLC, Jean Zimmerman, Save Ellis Island DESCRIPTION: The expansion of Ellis Island with new hospital facilities circa 1900 brought advanced methods in medical care as well as construction techniques and materials. This lecture will unfold the planning and uses of the hospital buildings on the NJ side of the island until they were abandoned in 1954. It will also explore a brief history of iron and concrete construction, demonstrating the progress of theoretical and applied sciences in building engineering. The Kahn system of reinforced hollow tile construction was widely used for floor/ ceiling systems throughout Ellis Island's contagious ward buildings, bringing benefits of fireproof, prefabricated and sanitary construction materials. A current stabilization project in the Staff House will take a closer look at this framing system; a second project will examine ground improvement through grouting to stabilize another building.
