In Memoriam: Jim DelGrosso

AIANJ is sad to note the passing of Jim DelGrosso, AIANJ member and Past President of AIAWJ in 2013.

R. James Del Grosso (“Jim”) passed away peacefully on June 16, 2024 at his home in Cape May, NJ after a courageous fight with cancer. Born on December 6, 1949 in Elizabeth, NJ, Jim was a man whose generosity, selflessness, and passion for life touched everyone he met.

Jim completed his education at Temple University with a degree in architecture, which was not only his profession but his calling. He furthered his education in management at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), equipping him with a unique blend of creativity and leadership that he brought into his work. As an accomplished architect and leader at CUH2A for over thirty years, Jim contributed to the design and construction of many significant projects leaving a legacy in the built environment.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was a dedicated family man. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Gloria Del Grosso (Wilson) whom he cared for selflessly during her battle with Parkinson’s disease. Together, they raised three children: Kathleen Solomon (Benjamin), Patricia Del Grosso (Thomas Coyne), and Christopher Del Grosso (Elisabeth). Jim’s role as a father was one he cherished deeply, and he instilled in his children the values of hard work, kindness, and the importance of family. He was a proud grandfather to Amelia, Sam, Caroline, Evelyn, Rose, Jack, and Luke, each of whom brought immense joy to his life. Jim’s love extended to his sisters, Marilyn Pray and Cathy (Ed) Grygon, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories and an unbreakable bond. Jim had a vast circle of friends, many formed during childhood and sustained throughout his life; others he picked up along the way or through his Cape May community. However, Jim cherished them all with the same fervor and served as a trusted confidant, sounding board, and tremendous source of laughter.

Community service was paramount to Jim and he was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus and Our Lady Star of Sea Church, where he exemplified the virtues of charity, unity, and faith. He was also a dedicated volunteer with the Cape May MAC. Jim’s selflessness was most evident in his willingness to help others, often putting their needs before his own. His generosity was felt in the small, everyday acts of kindness that defined his character.

As we bid farewell to Jim, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, laughter, and a remarkable dedication to making the world a better place. He leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished and upheld by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A viewing to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Friday (June 28th) from 10:30am until 11:45am in the Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington St., Cape May followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Cape May beginning at 12:15pm. There will be a private burial at a later date.
