Applications Open for Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship 2017-2019 Class

Prestigious three-year fellowship will partner six emerging leaders with community organizations to achieve design excellence in affordable housing

The application process is now open for the 2017-2019 class of Enterprise Community Partners’ prestigious Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship, which places emerging designers on the ground to bring together a commitment to community-based development with best practices in design. Launched in 2000, the highly competitive three-year fellowship has brought transformative change to communities across the country, creating and rehabilitating affordable, environmentally sensitive homes and community spaces that meet specific local needs. During the 2017-2019 cycle, six organizations in urban and rural areas from Boston to Oregon will each host an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow.

“The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship is a truly unique opportunity for emerging architects and designers who want to translate ideas about high-quality community design into action,” said Katie Swenson, vice president, Design Initiatives, Enterprise. “This year’s class of six new fellows will partner with local organizations and work every day to conceive and create homes and community spaces that are affordable, sustainable and accessible to jobs, good schools, transit and health care.”

Eligibility, selection criteria and a timeline of the application process are below. The six organizations that will be paired with Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellows include the following:

• Bon Secours Community Works (Baltimore, MD)
  • The fellow at Bon Secours will improve development capacity of the organization while focusing on how social determinants of health can be addressed through design and direct service delivery. (Click here for the workplan)

• Urban Edge/Jamaica Plan Neighborhood Development Corporation (Boston, MA)
  • The fellow with Urban Edge and JPNDC will be an essential bridge between the two organizations and will set the standard for cohesive neighborhood design in Jackson Square.

• Urban Housing Solutions (Nashville, TN)
  • The fellow at Urban Housing Solutions will play a major role in how their developments are envisioned and executed through a new 25 acre master plan across 3 sites. (Click here for the workplan)

• New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (New Orleans, LA)
  • The NORA fellow will serve as a liaison between the authority, the design community and the public, acting as a thought leader and community engaged designer on program and project design. (Click here for the workplan)

• People’s Emergency Center (Philadelphia, PA)
  • The fellow with PEC will support their strategic investments along Lancaster Avenue, including the renovation of historic Hawthorne Hall and providing much needed services to the community.  (Click here for the workplan)

• CASA of Oregon (Sherwood, OR)
  • The fellow with CASA will engage deeply with local and farmworker residents to develop housing designs that address their needs, and to explore how to lower costs while maintaining high quality. (Click here for the workplan)

All applicants must hold an NAAB-Accredited degree in Professional Architecture (B.Arch, M.Arch, D.Arch) and must be eligible to work in the U.S. for the entire fellowship period. Selection criteria includes architectural, academic and community experience; essays and response to work plan; design portfolio; references; participation at finalists’ summit; and an in-person interview.

The deadline to apply for the fellowship is July 10, 2016. Following a thorough interview process, final decisions and notifications will be made in November, and the fellowship will begin in January 2017.
