AIA New Jersey Treasurer Marvin E. Clawson, AIA, has been named the recipient of the 2019-2020 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

 

Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City – Marvin E. Clawson, NCARB, AIA, ASID, NJCID of Maplewood, New Jersey, has been selected as a recipient of the 2019-2020 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. This prestigious award is bestowed annually to the best and brightest professionals across the State University of New York System and in recognition of his outstanding work with students and in the classroom. Professor Clawson has been an Adjunct Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, in the Interior Design Department since the Spring Semester of 2009.

The Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence are System-level honors conferred to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. These programs underscore SUNY’s commitment to sustaining intellectual vibrancy, advancing the boundaries of knowledge, providing the highest quality of instruction, and serving the public good. Through these awards, SUNY  publicly proclaims its pride in the accomplishment and personal dedication of its instructional faculty, librarians and professional staff across its campuses. The awards provide SUNY-wide recognition in five categories: Faculty Service, Librarianship, Professional Service, Scholarship and Creative Activities, and Teaching. – The State University of New York

 

 

“Teaching is a real passion for me. I love the energy in the design studios and the collaboration with both the other talented professionals in the department and the student’s alike.” says Marvin Clawson. The world is always changing and the insights the students bring to their work keeps me thinking and exploring new possibilities as well.

Professor Clawson will be honored along with other award recipients at the Faculty Recognition Celebration on Monday, May 18th at 5pm in the Haft Auditorium on the FIT Campus in NYC. He will receive the SUNY Chancellor’s Award with a certificate of recognition as well as a SUNY Chancellor’s Award Medallion. The awards ceremony will be followed by a reception where other honorees, colleagues and family and friends are invited to share in refreshments and camaraderie.

 

 

The process for being selected, first required nomination at the Department level, then the College Dean Level, Followed by the University President up to the State Chancellor. An Intense application process including letters of recommendation, and portfolio reviews of both student work and professional work were submitted.

Marvin Clawson, AIA, NCARB, CIDNJ ASID is known for challenging his students and mentoring them to develop their creative potential while insisting on a very high level of professional conduct. Marvin accesses his broad network of professional colleagues as critics for student’s review which often result in the students garnering interviews, internships and full time positions upon graduation. Marvin maintains a professional practice as co-founder and partner at Clawson Architects in Maplewood, NJ. The firm is a full service, award winning architectural firm that is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. He has been known to offer internships and positions to graduates from the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Interior Design Department.
