The State of New Jersey Executive Department Has Proclaimed May 15 Through May 22, 2022 As New Jersey Architecture Week

WHEREAS, architecture influences the daily lives of all New Jersey residents through the definition and enhancement of the areas in which we work, play and live; and

WHEREAS, architects have helped create New Jersey’s unique visual character through their innovative and responsive designs of public and private spaces; and

WHEREAS, architects have made significant contributions to the history, textures, and quality of life for all residents in this State, by combining advances in building technology with design innovation to build healthy, safe, habitable and sustainable buildings and communities; and

WHEREAS, architects’ designs respond to a client’s needs, wants and vision, are required to protect public safety and welfare, are space and energy-efficient, sustainable and socially responsible, provide economic and artistic value, innovate, inspire, contribute positively to the built environment, and make us feel good; and

WHEREAS, architects are the only design professionals, through education, training, and experience, skilled in the art and science of building design, that are licensed to practice architecture in New Jersey; and

WHEREAS, architects are entrusted by the state to protect public health, safety and welfare through their concern for, and understanding of, such important issues as structural safety, growth management, accessibility for people with disabilities, historic preservation, energy conservation, housing for the homeless, and the sensitivity of the relationship between nature and the built environment; and

WHEREAS, the beginning of an organized architectural profession in this nation was signified by the founding of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) more than 160 years ago; and

WHEREAS, the American Institute of Architects, New Jersey (AIA New Jersey), originally founded in 1896 as the Society of New Jersey Architects; advocates good community design and responsible stewardship of the built environment; and

WHEREAS, AIA New Jersey currently has 35 architects recognized in the AIA’s College of Fellows, which is a limited and distinguished group of AIA members who have made significant contributions to architecture and to society; and

WHEREAS, AIA New Jersey has a statewide membership of more than 2000 and its members maintain the highest standards of professional qualifications, ethics and advancements in training and education; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Philip D. Murphy, Governor of the State of New Jersey, do hereby proclaim:

MAY 15 THROUGH MAY 22, 2022 AS NEW JERSEY ARCHITECTURE WEEK in New Jersey
