SCHEDULE

Tuesday, April 2 | 11:30am – 1:00pm ET
Part 1: Preparing for Successful Ownership Transition and Expansion | 1.5 LU
Rena M. Klein, FAIA, Senior Partner, CVG

How do firms succeed in transitioning ownership and leadership? When should firm leaders begin thinking about ownership transition, and what options are available to firm founders approaching retirement? How can successors truly leverage the knowledge and connections of
the founder?
Planning for leadership transition raises many questions and few answers. This two-part series will explore how existing and future firm leaders share equal responsibility for a successful ownership transition.
Part 1 of this series will focus on demystifying ownership transition and expansion, specifically how the mechanics of ownership transition work, including valuation, financial exchange, business operations, and firm governance. Different options will be explained, such as pursuing an internal or external transition, a merger or firm sale, or simply closing the business. We’ll present case studies of different transition “road maps” that align emerging leaders’ expectations and changing roles with those of current owners.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:
1. Develop clear goals and outcomes to begin planning for ownership transition or expansion.
2. Examine options for ownership transition pathways depending on the timeframe to retirement and openness to sharing leadership.
3. Implement multiple strategies to identify one or more successors for your business.
4. Explore case studies that show different approaches to ownership transition and/or expansion.

Tuesday, April 9 | 11:30am – 1:00pm ET
Part 2: Preparing for Successful Ownership Transition and Expansion | 1.5 LU
Rena M. Klein, FAIA, Senior Partner, CVG
Sun Joo Kim, Senior Management Consultant, CVG

Part 2 of this series bridges the generation gap between retiring firm owners and emerging leaders. Often, retiring partners focus exclusively on their retirement goals without factoring in the mentorship (and time) required to transfer knowledge to the next generation. However, if a
firm leader intends to transfer ownership to the next generation, emerging leaders need mentorship, tools, and skills to succeed.
This session will outline structured stages of professional development in the context of a “career ladder” for emerging leaders as a key component to effective ownership transition.
We’ll explore how focused leadership training should incorporate management, communication, and decision-making skills, emphasizing managing self, others, and the business.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:
1. Clarify structured stages of professional development to prepare rising leaders for future
ownership.
2. Outline changing roles and responsibilities for both exiting owners and emerging leaders.
3. Discuss how successors can leverage the knowledge and connections of the founder.
4. Recognize opportunities to develop the softer skills of firm leadership, such as
management, communication, and decision-making skills.

Tuesday, April 16 | 11:30am – 1:00pm ET
