AIA New Jersey Volunteers Sought for School Project

I’m teaching a special 5-week course at my alma mater, St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, NJ, introducing high school students to the architectural professional. This is my third year doing this. My class has 15 students. Students must interview architects about becoming an architect. I’m calling for local architects to be interviewed. The questions can be asked by phone or email. A phone call is more personable, and preferable, but an email could be an option. I need students to do their interviews between 5/13/2024 to 5/24/2024. Below are sample questions the students may ask:

What do you do?
What does your typical workday look like?
Why did you want to become an architect?
Where did you go to school?
What has been the most challenging part about being an architect?
What’s your favorite or most rewarding part about being an architect?
What advice would you give someone who’s thinking about becoming an architect?

Also, students must design a small project each week that requires sketches & rough conceptual drawings. I invite architects to visit our classroom to help provide a light and fun critique of their sketches and designs. These critiques could occur anytime between 5/6/2024 and 5/31/2024.

If any architects are interested in volunteering, please email me directly at bj_kurus@yahoo.com.

Architects are creative professionals, educated, trained, and experienced in the art and science of building design, and licensed to practice architecture. Their designs respond to client needs, wants and vision, protect public safety, provide economic value, are innovative, inspire and contribute positively to the community and the environment.
