Plan a Visit to Batsto Village and More for Pinelands Month!

October is Pinelands Month, a time to celebrate the New Jersey Pinelands and Pine Barrens. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance, a nonprofit organization that protects the Pinelands, created Pinelands Month in 1996 to encourage people to explore and appreciate the area. October is a good time to visit because the leaves change color, cranberries are harvested, and the air cools down.

The Pinelands Preservation Alliance works to preserve the Pine Barrens ecosystem, promote wide public engagement in the preservation and enjoyment of natural resources, and advance the acquisition of land and development rights for conservation. They seek to connect people with nature by promoting universal and equitable enjoyment of the benefits of our natural resources.

Some events that take place during Pinelands Month include:

  • Four single-day self-guided bicycle tours of the Pinelands that take place October 3rd through 6th. Proceeds from the tours benefit the Pinelands Preservation Alliance.  Register on-sire the day of the tour at Laurita Winery 85 Archertown Rd, New Egypt NJ 08533

  • On Saturday, October 12th, this free, annual event takes place and includes art, cultural, and heritage activities, as well as food and history.

The Pine Barrens are known for their acidic, sandy soil, high water tables, and diverse plant and animal life. The area is home to rare insectivorous plants, dwarf pine species, and the Pine Barrens tree frog.

In the Pine Barrens, visitors can find the Wharton State Forest, home to Batsto Village. According to their literature, Batsto Village is a historic site in the South Central Pinelands of New Jersey. It is known throughout the country, both for its beauty and its historical significance. Batsto has roots dating back to 1766, with nearly two and a half centuries of American history available for our visitors to see, all with the lovely Pinelands as a scenic backdrop. On October 20, visitors to Batsto Village can enjoy the Country Living Fair

There are wonderful opportunities for hiking and canoeing that you won’t want to miss. Pick a day or more to get out and EXPLORE the beautiful Paine Barrens of New Jersey!
