Course Title:    Three Thoughts: Sustainability, Work Commuting, and the Suburbs

Course No.:   AIANS 3.11.21

Presenter:   Craig Konyk, AIA is Chair & Assistant Professor of Architecture at the School of Public Architecture, Michael Graves College @ Kean University. Craig founded KONYK, a creative architectural design studio, in 1989, which seeks innovative approaches to architecture at multiple scales. He was formerly Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University and in the Graduate School of Architecture at Pratt Institute. He is a frequent lecturer and critic at other architecture schools and associations. Craig Konyk has been named an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York and was a finalist for the Rome Prize in Urban Design by the American Academy in Rome. He has served on the Boards of Artists Space, the Architectural League of NY and The Architect’s Newspaper.

Description:   This webinar presentation will introduce three projects that explore sustainability, work commuting, and new design ideas for the suburbs. Through the study of this work participants will see ideas that can lead to a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable world, aligning with the goals of the AIA Climate Action Plan. There will be breakout sessions for small group discussions.   1. Explore sustainability through the lens of an innovative project design case studies that offer positive impacts on humans, the economy, and the environment.
  2. Learn how creative architecture and planning can present a new paradigm for commuting and work that enables communities to promote climate sensitive design and adaptation.
  3. Understand how new approaches to the design and planning of suburbs can help support AIA Climate Action Plan initiatives that lead to a more sustainable, healthy, and equitable world.
  4. Engage and empower architects and designers to transform architectural practice for climate action.
  5. Envision solutions that enable architecture to actively create resilient and sustainable built environments that integrate communities and their surrounding natural environments.
