Small Firms, Tough Contexts: Ensuring Delivery of Design Excellence
1 LU/HSW pending
Presented by Charles F. Bloszies FAIA
November 15th – 7:00pm-9:00pm
Free to Attend
With a staff of under 10 practitioners, small firms are challenged to take on and deliver major works in difficult contexts – tight urban sites, historic settings, complex technical solutions – while also striving for design excellence. Apply lessons learned over three decades by this firm in San Francisco led by an architect, AIA Fellow, and structural engineer, including successfully resolved, large-scale commissions in urban infill (1 Kearny), multi-building adaptive reuse (Blu Dot), and modern expansions of a constrained, sensitive historic school campus (Cathedral School). The presentation will offer concrete ideas for small practices on how to position for and land these major works, as well as what drove the design solutions – and how obstacles were addressed.
Contributing to understanding of small firms focused on the SFx design category, the firm, Office of Charles F. Bloszies FAIA, provides insights into the successful work in relation to the size of the firm, though with an emphasis on reaching for the best possible design outcomes in aesthetics, sustainability, wellness, urbanism, technical rigor, and resilience and durability.
Small Firms Exchange Forum
Following the educational event, we will host a moderated Forum where small firms can talk about issues that they are facing in the day-to-day management of their firms and learn from their peers on how to build sustainable businesses and practices.
