Course Description (1 LU)
This course explores the architectural philosophy of Thomas Kligerman, a renowned architect who masterfully blends tradition and innovation in residential design. Drawing from diverse influences—such as the Shingle style of the East Coast and Puebloan elements from the American Southwest—Kligerman’s work merges historical forms with modern design. Participants will examine thirteen of his most significant projects, gaining insights into his evolving approach to architecture, materials, and site-specific challenges. The course highlights how Kligerman’s work harmonizes tradition and innovation, creating homes that are both timeless and forward-thinking.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore the integration of architectural influences in Thomas Kligerman’s work, focusing on how he synthesizes English, European, and American vernacular styles, such as the Shingle and Puebloan styles, to create his own distinct American aesthetic in residential architecture.
- Analyze the role of natural landscapes in Kligerman’s designs, understanding how the geography, climate, and environmental context of each site—from coastal shores to mountainous forests—influences the form, materiality, and overall design approach of the homes he creates.
- Understand the balance between tradition and innovation in Kligerman’s architecture, with an emphasis on how he blends historical references with contemporary design principles to advance the field of residential architecture while maintaining a deep respect for classical forms.
- Examine specific case studies of Kligerman’s notable projects, focusing on the design challenges and solutions unique to each project, and how these homes reflect the evolution of Kligerman’s architectural thinking and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional design.
